Useful AI does not require an autonomous decision. Swatch ID returns likely catalog matches for a photographed fabric, while Cutting Room Explorer surfaces production evidence for investigation. In both cases, the system narrows the problem without claiming authority it does not have.
Confidence should help a person decide how much review a result deserves. It is not a substitute for judgment, especially when images are ambiguous, records are incomplete, or several explanations fit the available evidence.
Explainability and traceability make that review practical. A candidate is more useful when it remains connected to its catalog record, and an analytical observation is more credible when the supporting production records can be inspected. The review step becomes part of the designed workflow rather than an exception after automation fails.
Human judgment remains valuable because people can apply context the system may not contain. The engineering goal is not to remove that judgment, but to give it better evidence and a more focused set of choices.
